Chapter 16
Jaz didn’t know how to react to Dani’s new intensity for life, so she sat back and watched everything unfold.
Shopping for the garden was an interesting experience. Dani threw herself into research and planning, and then they went to a store to select some tools and seeds. They spent an entire morning planting, only for Dani to announce that she didn’t enjoy the work that went into the garden. Once they actually finished planting, she wanted nothing more to do with it.
Jaz looked at the gardening equipment that lay next to the one raised bed they’d planted and sighed as Dani stalked off into the house. She supposed she couldn’t blame her. The work was physically demanding and it would be a while before they reaped the rewards of it. At least they’d only planted a few midsummer crops to experiment with and the bed was small enough for one person to tend.
After scratching gardening off the list, Dani visited a nearby dance studio a few times to see if any of the styles of dance interested her. She came home from each lesson invigorated by the exertion, but not eager to take another class. Jaz supposed that made sense. Dance and cheerleading weren’t very different, after all.
When Dani pointed out a yoga DVD at the library, Jaz said, “Don’t you think you’ve ruled out physical activity by now?”
“But this is meant to be relaxing,” Dani countered as she read over the back of the case.
“Maybe, but I don’t see it lasting for you.”
And it didn’t. Dani returned the DVD a few days later and poked around the fiction instead. “Maybe I could write.”
“Maybe or maybe you don’t need to try so hard. It’s not like you need to have a vocation or a hobby yesterday. Take your time and really think about it. What did you do when you were a kid?”
“Piano. Mom made me take lessons, but it turns out I hate playing piano and other musical instruments.”
Jaz bit back a laugh and nodded. “I should rephrase that – what did you like doing when you were a kid?”
“Anything that didn’t involve my parents, or my brother or sister. Jeez, we never did anything really fun or interesting. I hated piano, tennis, and ballet, the only things my mom would sign me up for. I was never really artsy, either.” Dani tapped her mobile phone against her lips as she looked at the selection of titles. “I mean, look at these gorgeous book covers. They’re beautiful – so lovely – but I don’t have an interest in making anything like that.”
Jaz had to agree. They were in the young adult section of the library and the book covers were pretty much amazing. Digital design wasn’t her thing, either, but she admired the work that went into it. The cover artists had to composite various images and then find a font that pulled it all together for the finished product, a book cover that gave potential readers an idea of the mood the story would convey.
